The median graphic designer salary in the Bay Area is $92,050 in the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont metro and $97,360 in the San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara metro, according to BLS data for May 2025. That is roughly 46% to 55% above the national median of $62,960. The middle half of Bay Area graphic designers earn between about $69,000 and $128,000.
These figures come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ employer survey, so they measure wages actually paid, not job ads or self-reported pay. We checked every number on Nov 1, 2026 through the BLS public data API. Below: the full percentile tables for both metros, hourly pay, related design roles, and how to use the numbers whether you are hiring or job hunting.

Why the mean is higher than the median: a smaller group of well-paid designers pulls the average up. For a typical salary, use the median.
Which metro is which: the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont metro covers Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo counties, so it includes Oakland, Berkeley and the Peninsula. The San Jose metro covers Santa Clara and San Benito counties, so it includes Palo Alto, Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara. San Jose pays more at every percentile, but the SF metro employs about three times as many graphic designers.

These are employee wages. Agency and freelance rates are higher because they also cover taxes, benefits, unpaid time and overhead: Bay Area agencies outside San Francisco mostly list $100 to $149 an hour. See design agency hourly rates in the Bay Area.

Two things stand out. First, the jump from graphic designer to web and digital interface designer is large: about $72,000 at the median in the SF metro and $104,000 in San Jose (our arithmetic). Digital product skills (UI, UX, interaction) are where Bay Area design pay concentrates. Second, there are more web and digital interface designers than graphic designers in both metros. For UX and product designer pay including stock and bonus, see the Levels.fyi comparison in the true cost of an in-house designer.
How the Bay Area compares with the US
| Median annual wage, May 2025 | vs national | |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $62,960 | |
| San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont | $92,050 | about 46% higher |
| San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara | $97,360 | about 55% higher |
National figure: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook (page modified Oct 29, 2026). Percentages are our arithmetic.
The same BLS page counts 253,100 graphic designer jobs in the US in 2025 and projects employment to decline 2% from 2025 to 2035. That is a national projection; BLS does not give one for the Bay Area there.

Why BLS, and not salary websites?
You will see other numbers online. They differ because they measure different things:
| Source | What it measures | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| BLS OEWS | Wages paid, from a survey of employers, by metro area | About a year old when published; no breakdown by experience |
| Levels.fyi | Self-reported total pay, including stock and bonus | Mostly larger tech companies; narrower job titles |
| Job-ad estimates | Salary ranges posted in job ads | Ranges are wide; not what people are actually paid |
| Payscale and similar | Self-reported pay from users | Check the sample size and date; some city pages rest on a handful of old profiles |
For a typical Bay Area graphic designer, BLS is the most reliable single source. For big-tech product design roles, read it alongside Levels.fyi, but do not average the two.
If you are hiring: salary is not the full cost
Employers pay more than the salary. BLS’s June 2026 Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release shows wages at 70.0% of private-industry compensation, so total cost averages about 1.43 times wages.
| SF metro | San Jose metro | |
|---|---|---|
| Median salary | $92,050 | $97,360 |
| Fully loaded (÷ 0.70) | about $131,500 | about $139,100 |
| Per month | about $11,000 | about $11,600 |
Tools, equipment and recruiting are extra. For the method, California payroll taxes and other roles, see the true cost of an in-house designer in the Bay Area. To compare a hire with outside help, see agency vs in-house.
If you are a designer: using these numbers
- Benchmark by percentile, not average. Someone with several years of strong, relevant work usually sits above the median. BLS does not publish pay by experience, so treat the percentiles as a rough guide.
- Name the metro. An offer in Santa Clara should be compared with the San Jose table, one in Oakland with the San Francisco table.
- Specialisation pays. Digital interface work and art direction pay far more than general graphic design in both metros.
- Check total compensation. BLS reports wages only. Bonus, equity, health cover and retirement matching can change an offer a lot.

For UX, UI and product designer pay, see UX designer salary in the Bay Area.
What we could not verify
- BLS publishes no metro-level pay by experience or industry in the data we used.
- BLS metro areas do not match city limits. “San Francisco” here means the whole SF–Oakland–Fremont metro.
- These are May 2025 wages. BLS normally releases the next annual set in spring; we refresh salary posts every six months.
